The Big Easy Satisfies Big Cravings at Mardi Gras

What first comes to mind when you think the words “Mardi Gras“? Is it the parade? The music? Maybe the beads? For me, being the foodie that I am, I go straight to the good stuff.  Crawfish, Beignets, Jambalaya? YES PLEASE!

After taking several trips to New Orleans growing up and tasting the greatness of this cuisine and knowing that Universal Orlando Resort brings all that to the table…I bring my knife and fork. And let me tell you, this food does not disappoint—it tastes like it is right out of the Big Easy!

The chefs at Universal Orlando Resort take great pride in the authenticity of these dishes, and I was lucky enough to get to talk to Chef Tom Danboise about these unique flavors from across the gulf.

What’s your favorite Creole dish to cook?
Gumbo! Because it’s the most challenging to make correctly, it’s also my favorite dish in the French Quarter Courtyard.

Describe in 3 words what our French Quarter food is like:
Authentic, fresh and tasty.

If someone is interested in Cajun cooking, what are the must-have ingredients?
You need Cajun spice, good quality shrimp, Andouille sausage and love to get those dishes just right.

Ok, be honest…best Beignets…Universal Orlando Resort or New Orleans?
I have had both and I like ours better. They are as close to the ones in New Orleans as you can get and you don’t have to go all the way to New Orleans to get them.

So there you have it: gumbo is the way to go! And, can’t make it down South this year? Here’s our Gumbo recipe to try at home. Just give it lots of love, and it will have your taste buds dancing to the Zydeco beat.
