Catching Up With Jesus Culture’s Chris Quilala on Music and Rock the Universe

It’s time to put Universal Orlando’s Rock the Universe playlist on repeat and get ready for Florida’s biggest Christian music festival.

I can’t wait to watch some of the genre’s top artists take the stage for live concerts on both nights. Jesus Culture’s Chris Quilala is returning for a third year alongside Kim Walker-Smith and Chris McClarney to help kick off the celebration Friday, Sept. 7.

Quilala took a break from his busy schedule to chat with me about the inspiration behind his music and why he’s looking forward to this year’s performance.

K: What inspired you to pursue a career in music?
C: I’ve always had a passion for music. I started playing drums when I was 12 and leading worship when I was 15. I had a life-changing encounter with God at a youth camp when I was 14 and it was from that point on I knew I wanted to give my life, fully surrendered, to God. I wanted Him to use my life to lead others into His presence.

K: What excites you the most about performing at this year’s Rock the Universe?
C: I love seeing God meet people right where they are at. We see it all the time – God restoring hope and filling people with faith as we simply declare who He is. I can’t wait to worship and see what God does at Rock the Universe!

K: What do you hope fans will take away from your performance at Rock the Universe?

C: Our prayer is that people won’t leave talking about the band, the songs, the lights or what happened on the stage…our prayer is that people will have a life-changing encounter with the love of Jesus and leave testifying about what God did!

K: What’s your favorite song to perform?
C: The song, “Miracles,” is very special to me. I wrote it shortly after losing my son and I needed to declare truth in the darkest season of my life. The lyrics in the song are a constant reminder to me that God is good and that He is the God of the impossible; the God of miracles.

K: When you’re not performing, what’s your favorite attraction to experience?

C: I love taking my kids to ride Despicable Me Minion Mayhem at Universal Studios Florida.

We’re just two weeks out from this exciting weekend filled with opportunities for worship and fun, Sept. 7-8 at Universal Studios Florida. Grab your tickets now to see Jesus Culture, along with Casting Crowns, TobyMac and more. You’ll also have access to the FanZone presented by Coca-Cola, autograph sessions with performing acts, plus the opportunity to ride your favorite attractions.

Don’t forget to share your photos all weekend using the hashtag, #RockTheUniverse. Hope to see you there!
