Nintendo Partners with Universal Parks & Resorts to Create New Theme Park Attractions

May 7, 2015

I’m thrilled to share that Nintendo and Universal Parks & Resorts today announced plans to bring the world of Nintendo to life at Universal theme parks.

Together, these two storytelling giants will create spectacular, dedicated experiences based on Nintendo’s wildly popular games, characters and worlds.

The agreement brings two icons of entertainment together and represents a significant partnership for Nintendo as it expands the reach and popularity of its characters and intellectual property.

Universal theme parks offer incredibly popular, innovative themed family entertainment experiences based on compelling stories and characters – using powerful storytelling and innovative technology. Nintendo has created remarkable and imaginative worlds filled with captivating stories and beloved characters.

Now, for the first time, those stories and characters will be brought to life in entirely new ways—only at Universal theme parks.

The immersive experiences will include major attractions at Universal’s theme parks and will feature Nintendo’s most famous characters and games.

More details will be announced in the future, as the Nintendo and Universal creative teams work to create specific concepts.

Shot’s fired! Shot’s fired! Universal teams up with Nintendo, a company whose own mascot, Mario, is more well known than Mickey Mouse?!? This is big..very very big. If Universal plays this right this could be even bigger than Harry Potter. Nintendo is the company with many franchises, well known, from Super Mario to Pokemon, to The Legend of Zelda and Metroid! Franchises considered the highest rated amongst video games. Not to mention Star Fox, Pikmin, Animal Crossing, and Donkey Kong!

Universal, do. not. screw. this. up.

It also dawns on me, Universal now has it’s own line of Princesses, not to mention some really well done female role model characters, like Samus and Zelda.

This just seems like a better and better idea.

Don’t go that far. Mario is very well know but not as well known as Mickey Mouse lol I love this but I wonder what they are going to tear down to make room for all of this.

“In the 1990s, a national survey found that Mario was more recognizable to American children than Mickey Mouse.” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario)

I think it’s going to replace The barney area but not positive…its just what i saw on another site…..which makes sense the barney area isn’t relevant for this generation anymore……im excited to see what they do with it!!

Actually, a study was done a few years ago where researchers showed pictures of the two characters. More people recognized Mario.

    • Reply Shannon May 8, 2015 at 12:45 pm

Nintendo is not more well known the Mickey Mouse. Mickey Mouse has been around a lot longer than Nintendo. I think it will bring a nice boost to Universal to bring more kid friendly rides but it still will not make them bigger then WDW.

      • Reply Janus June 21, 2015 at 11:16 am

Nintendo was founded in 1889 while Mickey Mouse was created in 1928. Get your facts straight

By the way, please make sure the people in charge of this have PLAYED the games.

Not just occasionally! I mean people who know what Justin Bailey is from. People who know what wave-dashing and slipstreaming are. People who know how to pronounce Pokemon. Who know how many timelines there are in Legend of Zelda. Who know how to do a barrel roll!

One of the biggest reasons why video game movies always suck, is because the people making them know nothing about the source material.

I got you a new tagline.

“Two Parks, Two Kongs; Universal Orlando”

    You’re welcome. 😛

  • Reply Kanethedragon May 7, 2015 at 6:55 pm

This sounds interesting. There’s a lot Universal can do with this, and as an avid gamer this seems like a prospect to visit the park more often. Especially whatwith the decline of Disney’s parks over here in Florida, this is definitely going to beat that even further if done right. I’m just wondering how many years the contract will be signed for until you replace those attractions.

My husband and I were talk about how cool it would be to have a Nintendo about 2 or 3 weeks ago. We just became Annual Passes holders last year and now it looks like we will be pass holders for Life. Our daughter is also super excited. She loves all the Nintedo characters and has a few ideas of what she would like to see.

Im not opposed to this in anyway, I just thought I should mention that, Nintendo and Universal have met once before, and not on a good note. When Donkey Kong first came out, with Mario jumping over Barrels. Universal Decided to try sueing Nintendo for Donkey Kongs likeliness of King Kong, although Universal lost, I still find it kinda ironic that the two are teaming up. Even though it’s been years since that happened. Nintendo has been pretty good at trying to make it out on their own as a Gaming Company, especially up against Sony and Microsoft, I just hope they try to choose their partners wisely. Don’t want something to fall through and end up causing Nintendo more harm than good.

Omg I wanna go on the nintendo rides!!!!

  • Reply Lindsay May 9, 2015 at 8:57 am

Honestly, Nintendo could make their very own theme park, dedicated to ALL the games. Could you imagine how many people would go there instead?

  • Reply Andres May 9, 2015 at 4:13 pm

OK Universal, I’m SO HAPPY!!!! Hears an idea though. Use the Zero gravity in Mario Kart (if u were to use Mario Kart) I don’t know how u guys would program Mario Kart or anything, but u guys have done the impossible, so I trust u guys with this, but plz don’t screw this up. Plz make sure that the people programming these rides and attractions know these Nintendo games, so they don’t make up random B.S. about the ride, and for Mario Kart, would you use a simulator, or actual karts? Some more ideas : Mario Party (not the new ones, they suck) ,Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros, Kirby, Metroid, Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Mario Galaxy, Paper Mario, Luigi’s Masnion (this could also be used in the HHN :3), Pikmin, Star fox, The Legend of Zelda, and much much more. Please don’t get rid of Marvel for this, I love Marvel! If u want me to help with this, well… u have my email :3

Incredible! Universal Orlando teaming up with Nintendo will no doubt deliver additional thrills that we have come to expect from both of these entertainment Giants! BRAVO!!!

I’m so excited for this! When I took my boys to Disney they really weren’t into it and keep asking when they were going to see Mario! My babies dreams are coming true, you can have all my money

  • Reply Janise May 25, 2015 at 10:47 pm

I’m mostly excited for Pokemon theme rides. There could be a ride based on Pokemon Snap where you take pictures of various Pokemon throughout the ride. It could be similar to the Men in Black ride where you are competing with other people to get the best score.

Maybe some sort of interactive thing could be done with the Pokemon games and the park.

    • Reply Neoxon July 23, 2015 at 7:48 pm

Don’t get your hopes up. The Pokémon Company hates crossovers outside of Smash.

  • Reply kitsunepeach May 31, 2015 at 6:05 pm

If I don’t see any attractions involving Zelda, Mario, Splatoon, Metroid, Starfox, Pokemon and Animal Crossing, I’m gonna be upset! also I hope Fire Emblem(a show like medieval times?) and the other classic games get some love too (kid Icarus, DK, Ice Climber, Duck Hunt, Kirby)

    • Reply Neoxon June 28, 2015 at 9:29 pm

There won’t be a Pokémon ride since The Pokémon Company doesn’t want Pokémon to cross over with any other Nintendo franchises outside of Smash.

      • Reply kitsunepeach October 18, 2015 at 2:48 am

Well that friggen sucks…:( a pokemon snap would of been amazing

  • Reply Brandon May 31, 2015 at 5:29 pm

This is awesome! Me and my friends have some ideas for rides that I think you’re going to like if you ever read this. For example, we could have a Luigi’s Mansion Haunted house, an F-Zero roller coaster with big blue playing in the background, a Mario Kart go kart track, a Pokemon battle stage show, a soarin’ from Disney-esque Star Fox ride, a Donkey Kong Country mine cart ride, and finally a Super Mario Sunshine water park.(and if they have time, Hyrule Castle Town as a shop for all this stuff.) Those are our Ideas for rides what are yours, be sure to post comments and let me know what you want to see.

  • Reply io blank June 17, 2015 at 1:53 pm

I would love to see a Mario kart simulation game ride where the players can race and shoot eachother with turtle shells and your seat would move and shake when you fell off the track or got hit.

Exciting news, just so long as others rumours are not true, like Islands of Adventures losing Marvel and replacing it with Nintendo and that this will be another separate park!!

All I know is I better see some attractions on Starfox,(simulator) Metroid,(simulator) Zelda(darkride), Animal crossing(a shopping village), and Mario(Mario galaxy, Luigis mansion, and Mario sunshine) and I would love a super smash bros stunt show or a fire emblem show

Unfortunately, Universal Studios has been going downhill the last few years.

They used to be amazing and innovative rides a few years back, now its all 3D screens.
Transformers 3D is a carbon copy of the Spider-Man ride… only less fun.
The new Harry Potter Gringots ride is abysmal. Being sold as a ‘high speed roller coaster’ when there is only about 10-15 seconds of roller coaster and the rest is sitting there watching a 3D movie.
Then there is the tired and outdated T2, another 3D attraction.
Despicable Me… yet another 3D one.
    Shrek, more 3D.

They are replacing the fun Twister with a Jimmy Fallon ride…which I hear is 3D.
Then there is the up coming Fast and Furious which is also said to be 3D.

Universal have become lazy and thier imganative and creative rides like JAWS and Disaster/Earthquake are all gone to be replaced by more 3D borefestes.

The only fun rides at Universal now are The Mummy and Rip Ride Rocket.

3D is okay, but it’s overused in Universal Studios. I’d like to see more innovative and creative traditional rides back instead.

Islands of Adventure is better overall but even those rides are now showing their age and won’t be long until they are all replaced with 3D attractions over actual rides.

If all Universal is going to do is even more 3D crap, then this is an wasted licence.
