Words from Out West: Switchfoot Talks About Returning to Rock the Universe

It was about halfway through the concert in a small church somewhere around San Juan Capistrano, CA, circa 2001. It was my first Switchfoot show (they had just become a quartet), and I was loving every minute of it.
Catching their breath between songs, lead singer Jon Foreman headed down to a guy from the front row that he’d noticed.
“This guy seems to know all our songs. Why don’t you come up here and sing with us?”
With only one mic between them, Jon and one fan with a quivering voice turned a concert into a night I’ve never forgotten.
The band’s bigger now (and so are their hits), but they still have that same connection with the crowd when they take the stage in the Universal Music Plaza. I’ve seen them three times here, but even in a sea of Rock the Universers, I get that same feeling of we’re all in it together that I did almost 15 years ago from the back pew.
We got the chance to catch up with them recently, and here’s what they had to say:
What is your favorite song to perform?
Right now, we are having so much fun with the song “Let it Out”. It’s quickly becoming a crowd favorite and embodies the reckless abandon of being yourself no matter what anyone else thinks.
What are your plans for the summer, are you on tour?
We’re finishing a 50 city Fading West spring tour and heading full speed for summer festivals. Then we’ll be continuing our Fading West tour in the fall.
What song has inspired or touched you recently?
I really dig the song “Oceans” by Hillsong. The melody is so moving and matches so well with the depth of the words.
What is your favorite Bible verse or passage?
Psalm 27:1 has been my favorite since I was a kid, scared of the dark. And now it reminds me of the same things on a grander scale.
“The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life, of whom shall I be afraid?” —Psalm 27:1
What are you looking forward to at Rock the Universe?
The croooooowd! The people at that show are so loud and fun, it’s hard not to have a killer time at an amusement park…right?!
What is your favorite ride at Universal Studios?
I love the roller coaster (Hollywood Rip Ride Rocket) that’s going on right behind the main stage. I will sit backstage and just watch people freak out and scream before we go on stage to do the same. See ya soon!!
And for you super fans, our friends at ReachFM have shared with us an even longer interview Jon Foreman did with Ruthie J. In it, Foreman talks about the Fading West movie, the meaning behind some of their latest songs, and how much they love performing at Rock the Universe.
Skip ahead to 6:30 to hear why they call it “one of their favorite shows of the year” and which songs they like to listen to on Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit.
To hear Switchfoot this year, make sure to grab your tickets now—and I’ll see you in the crowd.
